Hailing from Milton Keynes in 2013 and previously releasing their first album through Cherry Red records as The Breakdowns (‘Electric Shock Therapy’), which was then followed up by ‘An Institute For Skateboarding Otters’ in 2015, the band have now re-branded themselves as Jonny & The Mental Breakdowns and recently offered this new 6 track EP ‘Self Confessed Idiot Machine’.
Support slots with known artists such as King Prawn, Vice Squad, Anti-Nowhere League & Peter and the Test Tube Babies seems to have instilled a drop of punk essence into their sound and the six tracks on offer on their latest EP veer from the almost Oi! singalong of ‘Let’s Raise A Beer’ and the delightfully entitled ‘You’re Not Pablo Escobar’ to the rockier ‘Bricks At Windows’ and ‘Last Chance To Dance’.
All in all, a tight sound exudes from the speakers with all of the songs in compact arrangements and therefore not out-staying their welcome but the only gripe I would have was that I was expecting the odd terse guitar solo to cut through on occasions and jump down my throat….but these sadly didn’t appear. Obviously a minor glitch but this shouldn’t detract from the overall quality on offer and this EP is heartily recommended…..
