A Review of Grade 2 – Break the Routine

England has given us some amazing punk bands, from the Sex Pistols and the Clash, to Stiff Little Fingers and Sham 69. And they haven’t stopped yet. Grade 2 is an British punk band with a tendency toward fast, loud and edgy songs. With a sound that combines classic punk and Oi! style, Grade 2 put down a record that’s brutally honest and totally entertaining.

Grade 2 formed in 2013 as a cover band, playing hits from The Stranglers and the Jam, before starting to write their own original music. They played small local gigs as they gained loyal followers, and eventually signed with German record label Contra Records in 2013, before touring in Europe and releasing their first EP, Broken Youth, in June 2014.

Band members Jack Chatfield, Jacob Hull and Sid Ryan were just teenagers when they first started performing together, and have released two EPs and and two full length albums. The latest, Break the Routine, was released in 2017, and Grade 2 is currently touring to promote the album.

Break the Routine track list

Devil’s Dancen Hours
Pubwatch
Groundhog Day
Hearts of Gold
Mr Industry
Money In The Game
Turning The Tide
Falling Bridges
Medina Snake
Procrastinator
The Life and Tales (of Danny Ghoul)

Break the Routine is filled with songs that splice daily living with blistering social diatribe. They’ve been able to put both fierce lyrics and dynamic beats into their latest album, and have a full compliment of hits that will leave you wanting more.

Hearts of Gold is possibly the catchiest song off this album. With pounding drums and clear vocals, this song has you singing along. Ryan belts out the lyrics, “the greatest things in life are right by my side…. the ones with all the patience are the ones with hearts of gold.”

Falling Bridges is my favorite track off Break the Routine. You just can’t argue with the beat on this track, and it’s such a relatable song. “The bridges keep on falling, and who do we have to blame….” We’ve all been there, sometimes you just have to own the failure.

Grade 2 is on the road now, after a busy summer and fall. They played Rebellion Fest in August, and followed that up with multiple UK dates. They’ll be heading to the West Coast this December, playing in California and Arizona before heading home. And recently announced: Grade 2 will be supporting Dropkick Murphys on their upcoming spring tour in Europe, as well as playing at the Punk Rock Bowling and Music Fest in Las Vegas in May. Grade 2 is making their mark, with no thoughts of slowing down.
